DER OST IN DEN MEDIEN
The eastern German federal states often make it into national media coverage with negative headlines or on the occasion of unification anniversaries or elections. What effects do these media attributions have to this day? ARD-MIMA presenter Tino Böttcher guides viewers through three decades of East German reporting using media stories and scandals such as the ‘Bild’ story about the deceased Joseph from Sebnitz, Christian Pfeiffer's ‘potty theory’, the ‘Spiegel’ story about the ‘billion-dollar grave’ or reporting on PEGIDA. It starts with what is probably the best-known Ossi cliché: ‘Zonen-Gaby’. The stylised photo on the ‘Titanic’ cover, taken in November 1989 in a West German photo studio, played with the clichés that the media created about the East at an early stage.
